Fractal-line Mountains
June 2019, November 2025
In June 2019, I posted these images to Instagram, the result of playing with some color interpolations and fractal line subdivision to create abstracts of mountains at sunset. I’ve lost the originals, so now all I have are these blurry JPGs.
In late 2025, Ball & Socket decided to hold a silent auction to recoup NEA funds that had been cut. They reached out to artists they’ve worked with in the past, and I decided to revisit these fractal mountains for something to contribute.
I made the colors more surreal, added a reflection, and narrowed the field of view, hoping to see a strange, uncertain landscape ahead of me. I chose this one for the final, and named it “It’s gonna be tricky, but we gotta find a place to land the boat.”
I rendered a few more and made a series of it. You can buy prints of these.
